Here are 10 facts about the war dogs:
1 – The Navy SEAL team used a Belgian Malinois named Cairo in their mission to capture and kill Osama Bin Laden.
2 – It is estimated that over 10,000 American lives have been saved by war dogs.
3 – Once military dogs graduated from the training programs they can cost up to $8000! (Can you even put a price on the lives they end up saving?)
4 – Dogs have been used in battle for almost 3000 years! The Romans, Egyptians, Persians, and Greeks trained them for battles and patrol.
5 – In WWII only 4 of the 549 war dogs were not able to return to civilian life. Most were adopted by their handlers.
6 – Military dogs are used to detect bombs, drugs, and weapons. Among other tasks, they are also used to track and sometimes attack the enemy.
7 – One of the most famous war dogs was Chips. When he and his handler were cornered by the enemy. Chips broke free and attacked them in their pillbox. They ended up surrendering and were taken prisoner. Later that day he helped take 10 Italians prisoner. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Silver Silver Star, and the Distinguished Service Cross. The awards were later taken away due to the Army’s policy of not awarding animals.
8 – There are approximately 2500 war dogs in service today. About one third are serving overseas.
10 – The first war dogs were used as carriers. The military soon figured out they could be used for so much more!
